Beer has been synonymous with London with older breweries like Fuller's producing London Pride and Young's brewing their Special London Ale. Since there has been the bursting onto the scene of smaller operations such as The Kernel Brewery, Camden Town Brewing and Beavertown around 2009 / 2010 the beer scene in London has just gone from strength to strength so much so they now have a week long celebration called 'London Beer City', www.londonbeercity.com. Let's see what is going on in 2015.
London Beer City now in its second year is a week long celebration, organised by Will Hawkes @Will_Hawkes, running from the 7th - 16th of August for all things beer, pub and brewery related. There is such a plethora of activities going on that I'm going to pick out some of the ones I wish I was going to if I had time as well as one or two that I will be attending.
Brewer for the day - Clarkshaws, £20, 10:00-13:00 - Find out about the brewing process and how they make their beer as well as trying out some samples.
Blues & Brews - Camden Town Brewery, Free, 13:00-19:00 - Join the folk at Camden Town Brewing for an extravaganza of beer, food and live blues music all under one roof.
European Tap Takeover - BrewDog Shepherds Bush, Free, 12:00-00:00 - Try some beers from across the continent that aren't mass produced cerveza. It's also a great opportunity to meet some of the new up coming european brewers as well
Moor Tap Takeover & Meet the Brewer - The Old Fountain, Free, 19:00-23:00 - An exploration into the difference between cask and keg beer as well as meeting Justin Hawke the head brewer of Moor Beer Company, one of the most accomplished modern brewers in the UK who believes having a haze is the way to go.
Great British Beer Festival - Olympia, £10, 17:00 - 22:30 - One of the worlds biggest beer festivals is back and offering you the opportunity to try some great ale and some more rare beers if you can find them
Magic Eight Balls - The Cock, Hackney, Free, 18:00 - 23:00 - Magic Rock from Huddersfield are bringing along eight casks of their beer 'High Wire' each individually dry-hopped with a different variety. If you like hops you be hopping mad to miss this.
The Kernel & Partizan @ Brew By Numbers - Brew By Numbers, Free, 18:00 till Late - BBN open their doors to the public to come and try the beers being produced by them and their neighbours; The Kernel and Partizan. Expect some special brews and a large crowd
Beyond IPA with Ray Daniels - BrewDog Shepherds Bush, £18, 19:30 - There is much more to craft beer than just IPAs. Join Ray Daniels, co-founder of the cicerone programme (sommelier for beers) as he takes you on a journey through some of the many other styles available.
Brick Lane Historic Tour - Truman's Brewery, Brick Lane, Free, 18:00-20:00 - Join the owners of the now revived Truman's brewery on a tour of their old brewing site and some other key locations for them in the city.
London Craft Beer Festival - Oval Space, £38.50, 18:00-23:00 - Back in its third edition there are 25 brewers present. Expect some great beer, food and live music.
Dram & Brew - Climpson & Sons, £35, 19:00-22:00 - Expect a journey of discover as Weird Beard Brewing and GreatDrams team up to pair beer (some barrel aged) and whisky for your tastebuds
Cask is important: Cask Party! - Duke's Head, £10, 20:00 till Late - Matt Curtis, the founder and editor of total ales, will be hosting a tasting session where patrons will get to try eight thirds some of which are brewed exclusively for this event. If you can make it through that there is also an afterparty.
The Taste of South West London - By The Horns, Free, 12:00-18:00 - An extravaganza of south west brewing all in one tap room with a one-off collaboration brew being available as well
What are you drinking? With Pete Brown - BrewDog Shepherds Bush, £18, 14:00 - Twice beer writer of the year Pete Brown will take you on a voyage of discovery through the humble ingredients that make the beers we love. Some tastings will also take place to highlight the ingredients mentioned.
Closing Party - Mother Kelly's, Free, 20:00 - Another memorable week is over and you can celebrate that you have tried some amazing new things met some fantastic people or commiserate that you will have to wait an entire year for the next London Beer City.
